English Language Learners EL Program

Yellow Springs Schools English Learner (EL) Program is for students who have a language other than English spoken in their home and are working towards proficiency in language and literacy and to meet learning standards throughout the content areas.

Our goal is to provide high-quality instruction in the English language, as well as appropriate modifications in the classroom so that English language learners may develop the skills necessary to be successful.  A variety of instructional techniques and strategies are used to develop proficiency in Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing, and Comprehension.

All parents are asked to fill out a Language Usage Survey upon enrolling at Yellow Springs Schools to identify any students who may have EL needs. Any student who is suspected of needing additional support is screened to determine if they would be eligible for EL services.

Once identified as eligible for EL services, students are administered the Ohio English Language Proficiency Assessment (OELPA) each spring and continue to receive EL services until they score proficient or higher in all areas.

If you suspect your child may be eligible for EL services please contact our student services director, Donna First.
