English Language (EL) Program
The Yellow Springs Schools English Learner (EL) Program serves students who speak a language other than English at home and who are developing proficiency in English language and literacy while working toward meeting learning standards across all content areas.
Our goal is to provide high-quality English language instruction, along with appropriate classroom accommodations and modifications, so that English learners can develop the skills necessary for academic success. A variety of instructional techniques and strategies are used to support students’ development in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and comprehension.
When enrolling at Yellow Springs Schools, all parents and guardians are asked to complete a Language Usage Survey. The survey helps identify students who may benefit from EL services. Students who are identified as potentially needing additional support are screened to determine whether they qualify for EL services.
Once a student is identified as eligible for EL services, they take the Ohio English Language Proficiency Assessment (OELPA) each spring. Students continue to receive EL services until they demonstrate proficiency in all assessed areas.
If you have questions or believe your child may be eligible for EL services, please contact our Student Services Director, Donna First.
