Yellow Springs Schools is excited to offer open enrollment opportunities for grades K - 12. Our schools offer small student-to-teacher ratios along with hands-on, student-centered project-based learning opportunities.

Open Enrollment Timeline for the 2021-2022 School Year

Renewal period for current open enrollment students

February  15 - March 26, 2021

Phase I: New Open Enrollment applications available for K-12 

April 1 - May 28, 2021
Notification letters for Phase I applications June 30, 2021
Phase II: Additional window for new Open Enrollment applications* July 7 - September 3, 2021
Notification letters for Phase II applications Within two weeks of receipt of application

*A second phase will only occur if there are seats available after the close of Phase I.

Open Enrollment Process

 

Current Open Enrollment Families

Submit Notice of Intent to Remain 8:00 a.m. February 15, 2021 - 4:00 p.m. March 26, 2021.

If current open enrollment students do not submit their Notice of Intent to Remain by 4:00 p.m. on March 26, they will have to apply as a new student in Phase I

Phase I: New Families

Complete and submit an online open enrollment application. You can find the online application here. We are not accepting paper applications at this time. If you need access, a computer is available in the Yellow Springs Schools Board of Education office at 201 S. Walnut Street (Monday - Friday, 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.). 

Applications must be submitted by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, May 28, 2021. A second application window is not guaranteed. 

Notice of Approval and Acceptance of Offer

Parent(s)/guardian(s) of applications received during Phase I will receive notice of approval by June 30, 2021. Parent(s)/guardian(s) are required to submit a Letter of Acceptance within one week (7 days) of notice of acceptance. The Letter of Acceptance will be available online. A link will be included in the notice of approval. 

Phase II: New Families

A second window for new open enrollment applications will be opened if there are any seats available. Grade openings will be dictated by the number of seats available in each grade. 

New families can apply online beginning at 8:00 a.m. on July 7. Online applications must be received by 4:00 p.m. on September 3. 

Notice of Approval and Acceptance of Offer

Parent(s)/guardian(s) of applications received during Phase II will receive notice of approval within two weeks of application. Parent(s)/guardian(s) are required to submit a Letter of Acceptance within one week (7 days) of notice of acceptance. The Letter of Acceptance will be available online. A link will be included in the notice of approval. 

Enrollment Priority 

Enrollment priority shall be given to resident native students. Such students may not be refused attendance in the District, regardless of capacity. Resident native students also include those as defined by R.C. 3313.64.
 

Currently Enrolled Students

Students approved and enrolled in a school through open enrollment may continue in the District through all grades without reapplying so long as they indicate in writing their intent to remain enrolled on or before March 26, 2021. If a Notice of Intent to Remain is not provided on or before March 26, the student will be withdrawn for the following school year.
 

Siblings

To the extent possible, siblings of current open enrollment students will be given preference provided enrollment procedures are met.
 

Children of Employees

To the extent possible, children of employees will be given preference after siblings of open-enrollment students, provided enrollment procedures are met.
 

Other

Any applications not fitting the above priority classifications will be considered in the order in which they are received.
 

Waitlist

If a grade level is full, applicants will be placed on a waiting list following the outlined priority order listed above. 
 

Important Information about Kindergarten Applicants

A child must be age-eligible in their home district (district of residence) before they can apply for open enrollment in another district. 
 
Yellow Springs Schools will not conduct kindergarten screenings for open enrollment students who are not 5 years of age by August 1st.

Open Enrollment Eligibility

Please note that not all districts allow resident students to open enroll elsewhere such as Fairborn City, Mad River Local, and Oakwood City. Please check with your resident district before applying.
