5/26/2021 Update from Yellow Springs Schools Superintendent

Fearless Thinkers

Wednesday, May 26, 2021

Dear Yellow Springs Families & Staff,

Tomorrow is our last day of school for students, and our commencement ceremony for the Class of 2021. The upcoming weekend marks the end of our school year––the unofficial start to summer!

Memorial Day is a time for us to honor all those men and women who served and gave their lives for many of the freedoms we have today. This is also a time for us to honor the memory of all that we have lost and all that we have gained over the past year.

To say it has been a challenging year would be an understatement. We started the year virtually, transitioned to hybrid instruction in March, and returned full-time five days a week on April 5. We followed health protocols and were amazingly successful in keeping students and staff safe, including during the past two months of in-person instruction. Over 95% of our staff are completely vaccinated. Through our in-school vaccination clinics, we were able to get 40% of our students aged 12-18 vaccinated, and many more received vaccinations outside of school. I am hopeful for an approved vaccination for our younger students prior to the start of next school year.

Over the summer, expect communication seeking input on how we spend our American Recovery Plan funds for the next three years, as well as communication about the 2021-2022 school year. We will be returning in-person, five days a week. At this point in time, the Ohio Department of Education is not permitting 100% virtual instruction for students like they did last year, with few exceptions. Should any of you have questions about this, please reach out to Donna First at dfirst@ysschools.org.

I thank each of you––our students, parents, families, teachers, and staff––for your support of Yellow Springs Schools during the past year. I hope that your family makes time to relax this weekend. Enjoy the weather! Enjoy the ability to safely see family and friends. Rest, reflect, refresh, and recharge!

Finally, please join us in celebrating our 6th-grade students in their recognition ceremony this evening as they parade down Dayton Street, from McKinney Middle School to Mills Lawn, beginning at 6:25 p.m. Tomorrow night, Thursday, May 27, join us in clapping out the Class of 2021 in their graduation parade, which begins at 8:00 p.m. at the high school and proceeds down College Street, onto Xenia, and then returns to the high school via Dayton Street prior to the actual commencement ceremony.

Best,

Terri L. Holden
Superintendent
