Our Schools

Welcome! McKinney Middle School (gr. 7-8) and Yellow Springs High School (gr. 9-12) make up a pair of small, public schools nestled under the same roof in beautiful Yellow Springs, Ohio. We have a history of academic excellence, progressive independence, creativity and diversity. With around 350 students, our size allows us to work with, encourage, and know our students – their strengths, areas for growth, interests, and goals.

We take our academics seriously. About 85% of the student body pursues college after graduation supported by transcripts that reflect as many as six Advanced Placement courses and growing opportunities for dual enrollment partnerships with local colleges. Our student body exhibits high ACT and SAT scores and regular achievement in the National Merit Scholarship program.

In preparing our students for success in the 21st Century, we try to balance conventional efforts of academic rigor with sprinklings of interdisciplinary projects and authentic assessments. Understanding that all people should prepare for and lead lives of meaningful contribution, we are one of the first schools in the state that requires all graduates to develop Senior Projects and demonstrate additional community service commitments. Recognizing the demands of global citizenship, we annually host international students from all over the world, including Argentina, Austria, Italy, Rwanda, Turkey, and the Netherlands.

This small-school setting also provides many opportunities for young people to be involved and try new things. We offer a dozen interscholastic sports throughout the school year with a near-annual presence at state-level competition. More than half our middle school students play an instrument in the school band or orchestra. Many of our visual and photo/film art students participate in or win awards at shows like the Ohio Governor's student art exhibition and our very own Sundog student film festival. We stage a play every fall and perform a musical every spring; in between, students host the "One Acts" where students write, act, and produce a series of their own original plays. Countless other school-sponsored clubs abound, ranging from MMS's Power of the Pen to YSHS's School Forest Club.

In short, we are a small gem of a building in the process of many dynamic and energetic efforts every day – all intended to ensure we support each student in becoming the most amazing and accomplished person they can become.
