Meet the 2019 Athletics Hall of Fame Inductees! Richard Benning, Class of 1969, was a multi-sport athlete at Yellow Springs High School whose “red shoe” is still featured in the trophy case near the music room at YSHS. Mr. Benning participated in Cross Country, Basketball, and Track and Field. Richard’s main forte as an athlete was Track and Field. As a Junior, he placed third in the state in the 100-yard dash and won the 220-yard dash. As a Senior, he won both the 100-yard dash and the 220-yard dash. His double victory made him the first athlete in Yellow Springs High School Track and Field history to be a double winner at the state meet level. Richard’s winning 100-yard dash time of 9.7 seconds set a state meet record. Since the United States High School Track and Field Federation converted from yards to meters around 1979, his unbroken 100-yard dash time of 9.7 seconds has been grandfathered in as an Ohio High School State Meet record for Division III schools and cannot be broken unless the measurements are converted back to yards. In Basketball, Richard was a three-year varsity starter and led his team in rebounding during his senior year. Richard’s performance on the basketball court garnered a scholarship offer from Marshall University, which he turned down. After graduating from high school, Richard received a full scholarship to run track at The Ohio State University. He is one of two athletes from Yellow Springs who had track careers at Ohio State. As a Buckeye, Richard ran mostly sprints, specializing in the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash. He ran on several Big Ten Championship-placing 4x100 meter relay teams. Richard is the father of five children, some of whom followed in his footsteps as Bulldog athletes at Yellow Springs High School. Join Yellow Springs Athletics to celebrate the 2019 inductees at the Athletics Hall of Fame Banquet on December 7. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. at the Antioch Wellness Center South Gym and the banquet begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at the YSHS Athletics Office or Nipper’s Corner or online at Paypal.me/YBoostersClub. Meet the 2019 Athletics Hall of Fame Inductees! Gina Benning, Class of 1975, a multi-sport athlete in volleyball, basketball, softball, and track who competed in the first ever OHSAA State Girls Track Meet, will be inducted in the 2019 Class of the Yellow Springs Hall of Fame. Gina was a four-year starter for Girls Varsity Basketball. During her basketball career, she averaged 27 points per game and unofficially scored over 1,000 points, without the 3-point line. The Girls Basketball team lost just three games during Gina’s four-year career. In 1974, YSHS did not have a girls track team, but Boys Track Coach Bob Hartley welcomed girls to compete on the boys team and Gina lettered in Boys Track. When OHSAA sanctioned the first girls sport in Track and Field during Gina’s senior year, she competed in the first Girls State Track Meet on two relay teams. She was also a four-year cheerleader for the basketball and football team. At YSHS, Gina received the 4-year Athlete Award and Senior Athlete of the Year, and was featured as an Athlete of the Year alongside athletes across the country by Women’s Sports Magazine, publisher Billie Jean King. Gina attended Central State University on an Academic/Athletic Scholarship. Again a multi-sport athlete in volleyball, basketball, and track, she earned Best Defensive Player, Unsung Hero, and Women’s Top Academic Athlete for basketball her freshman year. She went on to win Women’s Top Academic Athlete her sophomore and junior years. During her senior year at Central State, women’s basketball went 15-1 and Gina received Top Athlete Academic Award and was named to the National Dean’s List. After graduating in 1979, Gina continued to play volleyball, basketball, and softball and coached youth volleyball and basketball. She was the assistant coach for the Cincinnati Lady Celtics AAU Girls Basketball team. In 2005, the U14 team placed 2nd in the state and competed in the National AAU Basketball Tournament. In 2006, the Lady Celtics won the National Qualifier tournament and competed in the National AAU U15 Tournament. As of 2019, Gina has completed her 44th year as an OHSAA Volleyball Official. She worked every post season in OHSAA tournaments, from Sectionals to State, in all divisions, since becoming an official. Gina resides in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 2014, she retired. Too young to retire, Gina now works in Yellow Springs. She has one adult child, Chelsea Richardson.
