“Be curious always! For knowledge will not acquire you; you must acquire it.” – Sudie Back

It’s time to start the 2017-18 school year! Our school staff is ready to engage your children through project work that focuses on critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration. I am excited about the development of new programs and resources at Mills Lawn. We have created a “PBL Foundations” program for students in grades K-3rd which will support our project-based learning model and give our youngest students additional “hands on” experience. We are currently building several maker spaces including a recording studio, wood shop space, and outdoor education area. The goal is to develop these spaces throughout the year and start to embed them into our project work and classroom experience. We want to provide the tools and support to ensure our students can go deeper and follow their passions.

As always, strong parent and community partnerships are vital to support our students and help make our curriculum come alive. Project-based learning provides many opportunities for “community experts” to share with students and support project work through feedback and discussion. Our classrooms rely on volunteers to help support students and teachers in many ways including extra help with academics, field trips, and social events. Please visit for lunch when you can and stay connected to the classroom through ongoing communication with our teachers. I hope you feel motivated to visit our school and plug in where you can.

There are some important changes in staffing that will support our efforts this year. Please welcome our new staff members to Mills Lawn: Chelsee McFarland (2nd grade), Olivia Dishmon (K-3 Intervention Specialist), Ryan Montross (6th grade Science), Amanda Kinney (1st grade Long Term Sub for Mrs. Scavone) and Lauren Mikesell (Paraprofessional). We also have some staff movement with Jessica Liming now in Kindergarten, Shannon Wilson in 4th grade, and Sarah Amin in the K-3rd PBL Foundations role (in addition to 6th grade Math). I am sure that these changes will enhance our student experience in many ways.

I hope your summer has been restful as well as exciting. I look forward to connecting with your family as the school year begins. Thank you for supporting Mills Lawn School and the Yellow Springs Schools as we chart a better course in public education. Go Bulldogs!

Thanks,

Matt Housh, Principal of Mills Lawn School
